Sri Lanka

This beautiful pearl-shaped island is located just south of India. The Indian Ocean and Gulf of Mannar provide some amazing waves and the island is filled with spots that cater to all different levels. Most of the waves are mellow and long, which will give you a good time on the waves. This area is perfect for beginner to intermediate levels of surfing, even though you can find some barrels and hallow waves. The waves offer the opportunity to practice cutbacks and good turns or learn to surf.

Being Queer

Sadly Sri Lanka still criminalizes same-sex and has a penalty for up to ten years in prison based on Article 365. That being said, if you are willing to compromise and not show public affection you should be fine. At the surf hotels and more international places, it is not a problem. From our experience, we haven’t faced any issues, but haven’t tried to proclaim our love publicly either. As always you can find both friendly and unfriendly people in the lineup, but the vibe, in general, is pretty laid back and so are the people there. The international crowd is growing bigger around the surf areas, traveling inland where it tends to have more conservative people with fewer encounters with travelers there might be some more issues.

Weligama area

When:

The best season in the southwest is November through April and opposite at the other half of the year.

The waves

Weligama and Medigama offer a good variety of waves, both point breaks, and beach breaks. Ask the people where you are staying for an updated surf report and where to go for the day.

The rooms has its own balcony where you could sit back and just listen to the waves rolling at the beach and the birds happily talking with each other. With Scandinavian minimalism and with a touch of local colors everything is made for you to relax, recharge and get waves. They are offering yoga classes and their cafe offers a mix of international and local cuisine. It`s the perfect place to hang out with the other guest or crawl into one of the big chairs and read a book.
